Smocking Patterns, Heirloom Sewing, Plates, Pleaters, Supplies & more....
Hello, Ladies!
~Are you bored to death?~
Looking for something to do?
Don't know where to start?
Well, maybe I can shlp you out a little bit....?
I've been in that exact same position and I was for a long time. I thought I was going to go absolutely crazy. I was sitting on the couch watching the snow pile up on the lawn and the snow piles get even higher. I knew it was time for me to find something that would keep me busy and make me feel good at the same time.
I wandered over to the local Specialty Sewing Shop and thought I'd just see what was new and popular and maybe there might have even beem some of my sewing friends from a few years ago to chat with too...
Well, there was a class just setting up on Smocking and I thought I'd just hang around for a few minutes to see what it was all about. I was absolutely hooked. I paid for the class and sat down and took pages and pages of notes. I was in love....!
When the class was over, I spent the last 20 minutes before the store closed up in the fabric department and looking at the patterns. I wanted one of everything, however, that was not realistic and I really had to take control of myself.
I bought 2 patterns and about 8 yards of fabric in about 4 different colours. Picked out the matching thread, got some new bobbins some buttons, lace, elastic and a few other little things for no particular reason

I couldn't wait to get home and get started. I ran in the door took my coat off and discovered that we had company and I had to put all my little finds and fabric away for 2 or 3 hours until the company left. Yeah!! I can finally take out the bag of goodies I just brought in and there I stood in the kitchen not knowing how to smock the fabric without a pleater. Never mind, I didn't even know what a pleater was at that point either so even though I was devastated, I wasn't really sure what I had to do to fix the problem.
I couldn't do anything more than just cutting out the fabric. There I stook in the kitchen with this beautiful fabric in my hand and I was at dead stop. Fortunately my hubby also noticed my sad face and this fabric in my hands or I'd really probably never have even finished what I had cut out either.
My dear husband, I love him dearly, told me to put on my coat & boots and said he'd take me out for a tea at Timmies. Sounded like a great alternative. If I can't sew, I might just as well drink tea. LOL No really a great trade off, but since I wasn't buying it, it was working for me.
Off we went heading in the direction of the coffee shop when he turned into the Sewing Shoppe without any warning at all. I'm now absolutely lost as to why we are in there since I just left it a few hours earlier and they were getting ready to close up shop for the night. But that was ok, I didn't say anything and just followed behind him with my heavy heart and absolutely no clue.

I was pretty sure that they didn't have any pleaters in the store, so it couldn't have been that. There Smocking Patterns were only minimal, and I had already bought the ones I wanted anyway. Well much to my surprise, they weren't out of pleaters and my darling husband bought me one on the spot. He also purchased the Thread box for it as well. I could hardly believe it was happening. I thought I'd have to find a way to do the gathering of the pleats myself, but, my husband became my Knight in shining armour, not that he wasan't already mind you.
I was absolutely thrilled and couldn't get out of the store and back into the truck fast enough. He still took me for that tea and I spent the whole time asking if he was ready to go yet. LOL I really wanted to get home and do some sewing with this brand new Smocking technique I had just learned about...
Well, that was in 1971 when my first son was born and I've been Smocking ever since. If you don't know how to smock yet, it is a wonderful project to teach yourself over the winter months. Once you learn, you won't want to put it down. The results are absolutely gorgeous and every garment becomes a family heirloom.

So, that's my story on how I got started and I'm absolutely certain that you will feel the same way once you've tried even a small item..
